This is said to be the largest single order of electric vans for Mercedes-Benz to date. The eSprinter and eVito electric vans are to be integrated into Amazon's transport network in the coming months and distributed across five countries.
Over 2,500 of the new e-vans are also to be used by delivery partners in Germany. This investment is part of Amazon's Climate Pledge and thus the goal to become CO2-neutral in all business areas by 2040. Just in January, the company announced the order of more than 200 electric trucks from Mercedes-Benz Trucks for its European logistics network. Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager Amazon Germany:
"We are very pleased that around 5,000 electric delivery vehicles will strengthen Amazon's transport network in Europe, with more than half being deployed in Germany. This is good
news for Germany: For our customers, it means a reliable and even more sustainable delivery. We are also pleased that the eSprinter comes from Düsseldorf and thus from a German plant."
Use for over 200 million packagesThe new electric vehicles are expected to cover more than 100 million kilometers together in Europe and deliver over 200 million packages annually. According to Mercedes-Benz Vans, the transporters have been adapted to customer needs based on experiences from Amazon's delivery partners. The vehicles, manufactured in Germany (eSprinter) and Spain (eVito), feature driver safety, ergonomics, and high delivery efficiency, for instance, thanks to custom-made shelves for package organization. In addition to Germany, the new vehicles will also be used in Austria, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Sagree Sardien, Head of Sales & Marketing Mercedes-Benz Vans:
"I am pleased that we are further intensifying our long-standing, partnership-based relationship with Amazon and working together on the fully electric future of transport."
Worldwide, Amazon has more than 30,000 electric delivery vehicles in its transport network. Neil Emery, Director Global Fleet & Product at Amazon:
"The new approximately 5,000 electric delivery vehicles underscore our efforts to reduce emissions in our operations. We look forward to continuing to work with Mercedes-Benz Vans, other manufacturers, and policymakers to drive electrification and decarbonization in Europe even faster together."
Installation of 360 kW fast-charging stationsIn early 2025, Amazon had placed its largest single order of electric trucks to date. More than 200 new eActros600 vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Trucks will be deployed for mid-mile transports starting this year. The e-trucks will operate on heavily frequented routes
in Germany and the United Kingdom, transporting goods between Amazon's logistics centers and distribution centers.
According to Amazon, it plans to install 360 kW fast-charging stations at key locations that can charge the batteries of the 40-ton trucks from 20 to 80 percent in just over an hour. The emission-free e-trucks are expected to transport more than 350 million packages annually.
In addition to the use of e-trucks and delivery vehicles, Amazon's delivery partners are also relying on electric cargo bikes. More than 60 micro-mobility centers have been established in over 45 European cities to enable millions of emission-free deliveries on foot or by electric cargo bike. Centers already exist in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt. Additionally, Amazon's delivery partners are also using electric cargo bikes in Freiburg, Aachen, Koblenz, Essen,
