The Mosolf Group, one of the leading system service providers for the automotive industry in Europe, and the Swiss energy company Axpo have announced the construction of one of the largest photovoltaic parking canopy installations in Europe at the site in southern German Kippenheim. Covering an area of 109,000 square meters – roughly equivalent to 15 football fields – the partners are building a state-of-the-art solar installation with over 54,000 modules and a total capacity of up to 24 megawatt-peak (MWp). The installation will produce more than 26,700 megawatt-hours of sustainable electricity from renewable energies annually – enough to supply around 6,500 households with clean power.
Over 85 percent of the generated energy will be fed into the public grid. A section of the installation with a capacity of 3 MWp will serve self-consumption at the Kippenheim site, thereby strengthening energy autonomy.
Combination of climate protection and practical benefits
In addition to its ecological benefits, the project also offers practical advantages: The PV canopy reliably protects thousands of vehicles parked on the site from sun, rain, and hail – thereby reducing weather-related follow-up costs. The working conditions for employees are also noticeably improved, it is stated.
"With the project in Kippenheim, we not only create a pioneering combination of energy generation and
space utilization but also take another important step towards our company-wide decarbonization strategy," explains Gregor Tjaden, head of the Group's Renewable Energies. "Photovoltaic solutions like this make a concrete contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions while simultaneously strengthening our energy independence."
The group is committed to expanding renewable energies and is investing specifically in more sustainable infrastructure. PV installations are in operation at several of the company's locations – including in Rackwitz, where a solar roof installation also contributes to self-supply. With this project, Axpo is also expanding its solar activities in Germany and contributes its expertise in building photovoltaic parking canopies. Mosolf is a longtime customer
of Urbasolar, Axpo's French solar subsidiary. The project in Kippenheim is part of the growth strategy in the European solar market.
"Our PV parking canopies combine sustainability and innovation. They provide protection for vehicles and at the same time make a significant contribution to the production of renewable energy," promotes Antoine Millioud, head of the solar business at Axpo and CEO of Urbasolar.
