As part of the transport logistic trade fair, the two trailer manufacturers Schmitz Cargobull and Berger Fahrzeugtechnik have presented a new generation of lightweight semi-trailers. The product line combines a weight-optimized chassis from Berger with a modular structure from Schmitz Cargobull. The aim of the development is to achieve a higher payload while simultaneously reducing the tare weight.

Integration of Sales Structure Following Participation

Since January 2024, vehicles of the "BERGERecotrail" brand have been available through Schmitz Cargobull's sales network. The background is the minority stake agreed upon in September 2023, whereby Schmitz Cargobull acquired 49 percent of Berger Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH. With the approval of the relevant authorities, the integration into

the sales structure was implemented. Since then, marketing has been carried out through Schmitz Cargobull's extensive European dealer and service network.

According to the company, the cooperation allows an expansion of the product portfolio to include lightweight semi-trailers for applications with high payload requirements. At the same time, access to Schmitz Cargobull's service offerings is opened for customers of BERGERecotrail.

Product Innovation: PerformanceCoil for Coil Transport

The "PerformanceCoil" was presented as the first model of the new generation. The semi-trailer is designed for the transport of steel and metal coils and features a coil trough with a length of 8,220 mm. The vehicles are based on a chassis made of high-strength

S700 fine-grain steel, manufactured at the Radfeld (Tyrol) site. The design principle is based on a weight-optimized frame structure following the geometry of a Reuleaux triangle.

Depending on the equipment and tractor unit, the maximum payload according to the manufacturer is up to 27.5 tons. In combination with the optional "POWER CURTAIN" structure from Schmitz Cargobull, the body strength according to DIN EN 12642 Code XL can be achieved without additional support slats. The side curtain is equipped with vertical and horizontal reinforcements, as well as an integrated anti-theft mesh.

Certifications and Application Areas

The new trailer generation is designed for various industry requirements. In addition to coil transport, use in

the beverage, automotive, chemical (octabin), tire, and agricultural bulk goods sectors is planned. According to the manufacturer, corresponding certificates – including EN 12642 XL – are available.

The product line also includes variants for high-volume, construction material, and pallet transportation. Construction options such as "Safety Roof," the "VARIOS" system, and anodized aluminum end walls with galvanized corner posts complement the offer.

Service and Telematics Integration

The lightweight vehicles are integrated into Schmitz Cargobull's existing service offerings. This includes "TrailerConnect" telematics solutions, financing concepts, 24-hour spare parts supply, and a Europe-wide service network with over 1,400 partners. In the next step, the full service portfolio is set to be extended to the
