IDS Logistics has fully switched the calculation of the Carbon Footprint (CFP) and thus of the CO2 footprint to the current standard ISO 14083. Since July 15, 2024, emission determination has been based on the EcoTransIT World software, which is regarded as the market standard for transport emission calculations. With this, the general cargo cooperative aims to strengthen the transparency, accuracy and future viability of its CO2 accounting according to its own statements. This is a central building block in achieving its own climate goals, it was further stated.
Targets for net-zero emissions
IDS had already in 2024 communicated the reduction targets on the path to climate neutrality. The transport- and handling-related emissions, calculated as a percentage
against the base year 2023 per tonne-kilometre, are to be significantly reduced.
It is planned to reduce these by 21 percent by 2030 and by 60 percent by 2040. By no later than 2050, they want to reach the target of net-zero emissions. The basis for this is a robust, standardized emission calculation at the shipment level, automated and standards-compliant.
Automated calculation with EcoTransIT World and REff-Tool
Since the go-live of the new calculation methodology, according to IDS, the fully automated calculation of transport and handling emissions for all national general cargo shipments in its own network takes place every night. In doing so, all sections of the transport chain including pre-, main- and post-carriage as well
as all transshipments are considered. The calculation is based on the two central components below:
- EcoTransIT World (ETW): An ISO 14083-certified tool for determining transport emissions. It uses both primary data and thus concrete transport data, as well as default values and thus statistical averages.
- REff-Tool of the Fraunhofer Institute: It serves to calculate transshipment emissions, incorporating the actual energy consumptions of the IDS Terminals.
Full transparency retroactive to 2023
As 2023 was defined as the reference basis for the emission targets, all shipments were retrospectively evaluated according to the new methodology, the general cargo cooperative said. The results for 2023 and 2024 are now available and will serve as reference values for the long-term monitoring of
CO₂ reduction targets.
The goal is to continuously improve the CFP calculation. Accordingly, the default values should be continuously replaced by primary data such as vehicle type, drive type or utilization, so that the effects of measures such as the first BEV-HUB main runs, which were to start in 2025, would be reflected in the CFP calculation.
In addition, work is being done on integrating events such as second delivery or forwarding of a shipment into the calculation. IDS Managing Director Michael Bargl:
„For only what is measured can be managed. The daily norm-compliant CFP measurement is the basis of our climate strategy until 2050. With it we set a standard for transparency and reliability in general
