This is said to be the largest single order of electric vans for Mercedes-Benz to date. The eSprinter and eVito electric delivery vans are to be integrated into Amazon's transport network in the coming months and distributed across five countries. Over 2,500 of the new e-vans are also set to be used by delivery partners in Germany. This investment is part of Amazon's Climate Pledge and thus the goal of becoming CO2-neutral across all business areas by 2040, it is said. Just in January, the company announced the order of more than 200 electric trucks from Mercedes-Benz Trucks for its European logistics network. Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager Amazon Germany:
"We are very pleased that around 5,000 electric delivery vehicles are strengthening Amazon's transport network in Europe, with more than half of them being used in Germany. This
is good news for Germany: for our customers, this means a reliable and even more sustainable delivery. Additionally, we are pleased that the eSprinters come from Düsseldorf and therefore from a German plant."
Deployment for over 200 million packagesThe new electric vehicles are expected to cover more than 100 million kilometers together in Europe and deliver over 200 million packages annually. According to Mercedes-Benz Vans, the transporters have been adapted to customer needs based on the experiences of Amazon's delivery partners, among other things. The vehicles, which are manufactured in Germany (eSprinter) and Spain (eVito), feature driver safety and ergonomics, as well as high delivery efficiency, for example, thanks to custom-made shelves for package organization. In addition to Germany, the new vehicles will also be deployed in Austria, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Sagree Sardien, Head
of Sales & Marketing Mercedes-Benz Vans:
"I am happy that we are further intensifying our long-standing, collaborative relationship with Amazon and working together on the all-electric future of transport."
Worldwide, Amazon has over 30,000 electric delivery vehicles in its transport network. Neil Emery, Director Global Fleet & Product at Amazon:
"The new approximately 5,000 electric delivery vehicles highlight our efforts to reduce emissions in our operations. We look forward to continuing to work with Mercedes-Benz Vans, other manufacturers, and policymakers to drive the electrification and decarbonization in Europe even faster together."
Installation of 360-kW fast-charging stationsAmazon placed its largest single order of electric trucks at the beginning of 2025. More than 200 new eActros600 vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Trucks will be used for transport on the "middle mile" starting this year. The electric trucks will run on heavily
frequented routes in Germany and the United Kingdom, transporting goods between Amazon's logistics centers and distribution centers.
According to its own statements, Amazon plans to install 360-kW fast-charging stations at key locations, which can charge the 40-ton trucks' batteries from 20 to 80 percent in just over an hour. The emission-free electric trucks are expected to transport more than 350 million packages annually.
In addition to the use of electric trucks and delivery vehicles, Amazon's delivery partners also rely on electric cargo bikes. More than 60 micromobility centers have been established in over 45 European cities to enable millions of emission-free deliveries on foot or by electric cargo bikes. There are already centers in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt. Additionally, Amazon's delivery partners are also using electric cargo bikes in Freiburg, Aachen, Koblenz, Essen, and Ulm/Neu-Ulm.
