The Liebherr Group is further expanding its global logistics infrastructure: A new, modern logistics center is being built in Tupelo, Mississippi. Responsible for planning and delivering the customized intralogistics solution is intralogistics expert SSI Schäfer. With the new location, Liebherr-Logistics GmbH, the group's internal logistics service provider, aims to optimize its spare parts logistics for North and South America and significantly accelerate customer service.
"With this facility, we offer our customers faster, more efficient service and strengthen our position as an industry leader," said Jörg Ströbele, Managing Director of Liebherr-Logistics GmbH.
The new logistics facility will handle tasks such as warehousing, distribution, pre-assembly, repacking, as well as customs and export processing. Spare parts from various product segments—ranging from earthmoving machines and cranes to concrete technology and components—will be stored and distributed. Additional product areas are to be gradually added.
Fully Automated Intralogistics
with High-Bay Warehouse in Silo Construction
SSI Schäfer, acting as the general contractor, provides a fully automated intralogistics solution that includes a seven-aisle high-bay warehouse with over 39,700 storage locations. The high-bay warehouse will be constructed as a self-supporting silo building, which makes a separate hall construction unnecessary and allows for extremely space- and resource-efficient construction. Energy-efficient storage and retrieval machines of the "SSI Exyz" type are used to ensure powerful and sustainable operation.
"We have been working with SSI Schäfer for many years in a trusting collaboration and are pleased that the new warehouse is also tailored exactly to our requirements. The solution supports us in continuing to provide our customers with fast service and reliable spare parts deliveries. This positions us well for the future," Jörg Ströbele continued.
The system is complemented by a shuttle warehouse, conveyor technology, and SAP
Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM). The 8-aisle shuttle warehouse offers around 170,000 container storage locations. For this purpose, over 450 "SSI Flexi Shuttles" are used, which, thanks to the "3D-MATRIX Solution," ensure sequencing of small parts picking.
In addition to automated warehouse areas, there are also various manual warehouse zones planned: pallet racks of the PR 600 type with more than 9,500 storage locations, cantilever racks with over 690 storage locations, and a special oil and hazardous goods warehouse with over 1,100 storage locations. There are five pallet and eight container workstations available for picking. Additional workstations for repacking and packaging are already planned to meet growing demands. Conveyor technology for pallets, containers, and boxes, as well as an electric floor train, connect the central trades with each other.
SAP EWM with Integrated Material Flow System (MFS)
The warehouse management via SAP
Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM) is implemented by SWAN GmbH. The member of the SSI Schäfer Group is specialized in complex software solutions. SAP EWM is supplemented by the integrated Material Flow System (MFS) and directly connected to the automatic warehouse controls.
Future growth was already considered in the planning phase: The concept should allow a doubling of output, so the high-bay warehouse can be significantly expanded even with increasing demands. Construction for the new logistics center is scheduled to begin in September 2025. Regular operations are planned to commence in 2027.
In addition to its headquarters in Oberopfingen, Germany, Liebherr-Logistics GmbH has been operating another warehouse in Born, Netherlands, since 2023. With the new facility in Tupelo, the presence on the American continent will be further expanded. Liebherr-Logistics employs over 430 employees and supplies more than 70 sales and service companies
