The truck models Volvo FH and Volvo FH Aero will be available to order from September 2025 with a novel start-stop function. The system can switch off the engine on downhill sections. This is intended to reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and to lower operating costs. Following the introduction of the Aero cab for the Volvo FH Aero

in 2024, this would be Volvo Trucks' next step to reduce the negative climate impact of its vehicles.

The start-stop function uses Volvo Trucks' I-Roll and I-See technology.

The start-stop function was developed internally at Volvo and is based on Volvo's I-Roll or I-See technology. The constant monitoring of road data and information on road gradient enables the start-stop function

to recognize downhill grades and temporarily shut off the engine. This means that during the roll phase no fuel is consumed and no CO2 emissions are produced.

The start-stop function harmonizes with the I-Roll system and can, depending on external influences such as ambient temperature and topography, further reduce fuel consumption. To activate the start-stop function, the corresponding vehicle must

travel at least 60 km/h.

Jan Hjelmgren, the head of product management at Volvo Trucks, says that they will continue to rely on innovations in their internal combustion engines to reduce environmental impact. The Volvo FH Aero won the Green Truck 2025 award this year.
