APM Terminals and the Croatian Enna Group have officially opened the new Rijeka Gateway container terminal in Rijeka. According to the Maersk Group, to which APM Terminals belongs, this represents the largest private investment to date in Croatia's logistics infrastructure. The terminal aims to make Rijeka a central hub for freight traffic between Asia and Europe.

Opening after two years of construction

The inauguration of the terminal took place on 29 October 2025 in the presence of Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. According to the information, the facility was put into operation after a two-year construction period in September 2025. More than 300 guests attended the opening ceremony.

„With the extraordinary support of the shareholders APM Terminals and Enna Group as well as strong backing from numerous institutions – at municipal, regional and national levels,

including the government of Croatia – we have built and equipped the terminal on schedule, employed over 280 dedicated staff, and commenced operations. The eighth commercial ship is already arriving, and even though there is still work ahead to achieve the highest operational excellence we have set as a goal, I am confident that with the team we have built we will quickly be successful,“ says Peter Corfitsen, Managing Director of Rijeka Gateway.

Investment in a strategic logistics hub

Rijeka Gateway is operated as a joint venture of APM Terminals and the Enna Group. The investment volume for the terminal amounts to around €380 million. Including the associated infrastructure such as road and rail connections, the total investment amounts to about €600 million. This is intended to establish Croatia in the long term as a logistics gateway to Central and Southeast Europe.

Capacity and expansion plan

In the first expansion phase, the facility has a 400-meter-long quay and an annual throughput capacity of 650,000 standard containers. After completion of the planned expansion, the quay is to be extended to 680 meters and the annual capacity increased to over one million standard containers. According to the company, the terminal operator currently employs 280 people; the workforce is to grow to 300.

Technical equipment and digitalization

The terminal is equipped with four remotely operated ship-loading cranes, 15 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, two rail-mounted gantry cranes, and 28 terminal tractors. All systems are connected to a central, remotely controlled control center. According to the Moeller Group, Rijeka Gateway is the first port site in Croatia to have an industrial private 5G network. This network links all terminal systems and is intended, according to the company, to enable a

safe, efficient and automated operation.

Sustainable operating processes

Rijeka Gateway operates with fully automated processes and relies on the use of renewable energy. It is the first terminal of its kind in the Adriatic region, according to the press release. The terminal is to serve as a model for sustainable port logistics. Moeller emphasizes that, in addition to handling sea freight, local economic effects and employment are also in focus.

Further infrastructure measures planned

The terminal is part of the East-West network within the Gemini cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. It lies on the AE12/SE1 route and is thus integrated into one of the most important shipping connections between Asia and Europe. According to the operators, Rijeka Gateway offers shorter transport routes to the Central European hinterland due to its geographic location and should strengthen the competitiveness of the ports on the
